What is broadband failover for offices?

Broadband failover is a continuity arrangement that automatically, or in some cases manually, switches internet traffic from a primary connection to a backup connection if the main service becomes unavailable. The aim is simple: keep the office connected while the primary line is restored.

Fixed backup can be a sensible option for offices with consistent demand, but local availability and the physical route into the building can influence how independent the two connections really are.

4G and 5G backup

Mobile failover is often a practical choice where a rapid backup route is needed or where installing a second fixed service is not suitable. A 4G or 5G connection can keep essential services running during a fixed-line outage, particularly for smaller offices or teams with modest data requirements.

Its effectiveness depends on signal strength, network coverage and the number of users sharing the connection. Mobile backup is excellent for protecting priority services, but it may not be the right answer for an entire office attempting to run large file transfers, high-definition video meetings and cloud backups at the same time.

Prioritising essential traffic

The most useful failover plans identify critical services before an incident occurs. During a backup event, you may want to prioritise VoIP calls, payment terminals, customer systems and essential cloud applications, while restricting non-essential downloads or background synchronisation.

This approach makes the available capacity work harder for the people and services that matter most. It also gives managers a clearer plan for how the business will operate during a longer outage.

Protecting cloud telephony during an outage

For many organisations, the ability to answer the phone is the first test of whether continuity arrangements are working. If your telephony is cloud-based, it can continue over the failover connection, allowing staff to keep making and receiving business calls without changing numbers or abandoning established call handling processes.

That said, voice traffic needs to be considered carefully. Call quality relies on sufficient bandwidth, low latency and sensible network configuration. If a backup service is being shared with heavy internet use, call quality can suffer. Prioritising voice traffic and setting realistic expectations for other activity during an outage can protect the customer experience.

A wider continuity plan may also include call routing options for key teams, such as reception, support or sales. This is especially valuable for businesses with hybrid workers, where calls may need to be answered across office and remote locations if a site is affected.

Questions to answer before choosing a solution

The best starting point is operational rather than technical. Consider how long your organisation can realistically function without internet access, and which teams or services would be affected first. A manufacturer may need connectivity for stock systems and dispatch. A healthcare provider may need access to scheduling and patient communications. A professional services firm may place the highest priority on secure cloud access and client calls.

You should also establish the number of users likely to be online during a failover event, the applications they use and the level of performance those applications require. An office where ten people need email and calls has a very different requirement from a contact centre with dozens of concurrent users.

Ask whether your primary and backup services are exposed to the same risk. Two lines entering the same building through the same route may offer less protection against an external cable issue than they appear to. Finally, agree who will be notified when failover occurs and how the service will be tested. Continuity works best when staff know what to expect.

Failover involves more than ordering a second connection. It requires assessment, suitable equipment, network configuration, testing and ongoing support.
